Sino-Dutch Energy for the Future Seminar

Energy for the Future: Sino-Dutch Seminar on Challenges and Opportunities in the Energy Domain was held at Tsinghua University on October 27-28, 2008. During the two-day seminar, experts and researchers from China and the Netherlands shared their knowledge and viewpoints on solar energy, sustainable building, nuclear technology, biomass conversion, wind energy, electricity storage and distribution, clean coal, and aerospace.

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Dr. Jan Peter Balkenende, spoke at the Seminar’s Opening Ceremony on October 27. In his speech, Prime Minister Balkenende talked about the challenges facing world economic development. He stressed the importance of international cooperation to meet the challenges, especially in the areas of energy and climate change. Prime Minister Balkenende said, “The cooperation between China and the Netherlands is so very important. We can learn a lot from each other, and we must, because global problems demand globalization and global cooperation”. He also praised China’s efforts to combat climate change and its pursuit of quality growth.

The Energy for the Future Seminar was also part of the second Joint Scientific Workshop of Tsinghua and Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). During the workshop, Tsinghua and TU Delft signed three agreements to further their cooperation in energy, aerospace, and architecture. Tsinghua and TU Delft initially established their cooperative relations in 1982. In January 2007, the first Joint Scientific Workshop was held at Delft.
